2006-01-08[PATCH] use ptrace_get_task_struct in various placesGravatar Christoph Hellwig 1-20/+6
The ptrace_get_task_struct() helper that I added as part of the ptrace consolidation is useful in variety of places that currently opencode it. Switch them to the common helpers. Add a ptrace_traceme() helper that needs to be explicitly called, and simplify the ptrace_get_task_struct() interface. We don't need the request argument now, and we return the task_struct directly, using ERR_PTR() for error returns. It's a bit more code in the callers, but we have two sane routines that do one thing well now. 2006-01-08[PATCH] fix more missing includesGravatar Tim Schmielau 1-0/+1
Include fixes for 2.6.14-git11. Should allow to remove sched.h from module.h on i386, x86_64, arm, ia64, ppc, ppc64, and s390. Probably more to come since I haven't yet checked the other archs. 2006-01-04Relax the rw_verify_area() error checking.Gravatar Linus Torvalds 1-2/+2
In particular, allow over-large read- or write-requests to be downgraded to a more reasonable range, rather than considering them outright errors. We want to protect lower layers from (the sadly all too common) overflow conditions, but prefer to do so by chopping the requests up, rather than just refusing them outright. 2005-11-09[PATCH] sched: disable preempt in idle tasksGravatar Nick Piggin 2-1/+5
Run idle threads with preempt disabled. Also corrected a bugs in arm26's cpu_idle (make it actually call schedule()). How did it ever work before? Might fix the CPU hotplugging hang which Nigel Cunningham noted. We think the bug hits if the idle thread is preempted after checking need_resched() and before going to sleep, then the CPU offlined. After calling stop_machine_run, the CPU eventually returns from preemption and into the idle thread and goes to sleep. The CPU will continue executing previous idle and have no chance to call play_dead. By disabling preemption until we are ready to explicitly schedule, this bug is fixed and the idle threads generally become more robust. 2005-11-09[PATCH] changing CONFIG_LOCALVERSION rebuilds too much, for no good reasonGravatar Olaf Hering 1-1/+0
This patch removes almost all inclusions of linux/version.h. The 3 #defines are unused in most of the touched files. A few drivers use the simple KERNEL_VERSION(a,b,c) macro, which is unfortunatly in linux/version.h. There are also lots of #ifdef for long obsolete kernels, this was not touched. In a few places, the linux/version.h include was move to where the LINUX_VERSION_CODE was used. quilt vi `find * -type f -name "*.[ch]"|xargs grep -El '(UTS_RELEASE|LINUX_VERSION_CODE|KERNEL_VERSION|linux/version.h)'|grep -Ev '(/(boot|coda|drm)/|~$)'` search pattern: /UTS_RELEASE\|LINUX_VERSION_CODE\|KERNEL_VERSION\|linux\/\(utsname\|version\).h Signed-off-by: Olaf Hering <olh@suse.de> Signed-off-by: Andrew Morton <akpm@osdl.org> Signed-off-by: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@osdl.org>

2005-11-07[PATCH] consolidate sys_ptrace()Gravatar Christoph Hellwig 1-50/+5
The sys_ptrace boilerplate code (everything outside the big switch statement for the arch-specific requests) is shared by most architectures. This patch moves it to kernel/ptrace.c and leaves the arch-specific code as arch_ptrace. Some architectures have a too different ptrace so we have to exclude them. They continue to keep their implementations. For sh64 I had to add a sh64_ptrace wrapper because it does some initialization on the first call. For um I removed an ifdefed SUBARCH_PTRACE_SPECIAL block, but SUBARCH_PTRACE_SPECIAL isn't defined anywhere in the tree. Manual #include fixups for clashes - there may be some unnecessary
2005-10-30[PATCH] fix missing includesGravatar Tim Schmielau 1-0/+1
I recently picked up my older work to remove unnecessary #includes of sched.h, starting from a patch by Dave Jones to not include sched.h from module.h. This reduces the number of indirect includes of sched.h by ~300. Another ~400 pointless direct includes can be removed after this disentangling (patch to follow later). However, quite a few indirect includes need to be fixed up for this. In order to feed the patches through -mm with as little disturbance as possible, I've split out the fixes I accumulated up to now (complete for i386 and x86_64, more archs to follow later) and post them before the real patch. This way this large part of the patch is kept simple with only adding #includes, and all hunks are independent of each other. So if any hunk rejects or gets in the way of other patches, just drop it. My scripts will pick it up again in the next round.
